The reflection of this small shed or boat house across the river caught my eye. I had to make this image even though the sky was not cooperating.
I made this image at one of my favorite spots in the world. Every summer my family and I go to northern WI USA for a week to get away from our everyday life in the city and spend time in nature with some wonderful friends. The family camp where we stay has a small collection of paddle boats that can be taken out on this small peaceful lake. If we're lucky, we can hear the Loons calling to each other while we're on the water. It's magical!
Just East of Marquette Michigan there's an un-named beach and picnic area right off the highway. It's a wonderful place to watch the sunset over Lake Superior. It was so peaceful to just sit in the sand and listen to the waves as the sun went down. I can't wait to get back.
There's an abandoned lighthouse near Munising, MI USA that you go past on many of the boat tours that run out of that town and go past Grand Island. It's a beautiful old building with an interesting history. One of the tours we took happened on a day when it was so foggy that the trip was almost cancelled. Looking at this deserted lighthouse as we went past in the fog was a surreal experience. It made me wonder about the things that one would have seen while tending this lighthouse in it's heyday.

No trip to the UP of Michigan, USA would be complete without stopping to see the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This formation is known as Miners Castle and is visible from an overlook just to the South.

My wife and I took a walk down to a frozen Lake Red Rock near Pella, IA late one December. It was sooo cold, but this sunset made it worth the pain.

Two of my kids and I went for a walk near Lake Mendota on the campus of the University of Wisconsin Madison. There wasn't much going on that evening, but my son found a duck out on this pier and went to introduce himself. I love the innocence in this image.
Our family loves to be on the water when we can, especially in a kayak or canoe. Luckily for us, this lake is only a 5 minute drive from our home so we frequent it in the summers. This image is of my daughter one evening at sunset.
We stopped at the Crystal Reservoir Visitor Center on our drive to the top of Pikes Peak. Pikes peak is on the left of this image and the actual peak is hidden in the clouds. We had hoped to be able to take the shuttle to the top, but for poor planning we arrived too late in the day. So I white-knuckled our rented mini-van all the way to the visitor center at the summit. That was one of the scariest things I've ever done and I don't know if I'd do it again, but looking back now, it was a really neat experience.
A group of co-workers and I took an October afternoon off and headed to a local pumpkin farm for some fall fun. Walking back from the corn maze, I came across this scene and between the pumpkins, the dead vines, and the amazing sky, I just had to make this image.
I was waiting outside our church one afternoon while my daughter finished her guitar lesson. There was a small storm moving in and I really liked the way the cross was standing tall against the pre-storm clouds as they rolled by.
The North shore of Lake Erie near Buffalo, NY was a wonderful place for a beach getaway. Lots of thunderstorms during the nights and beautiful sunsets.
The dramatic sky was what caught my eye while on a walk, but the beam of sunlight that my camera captured is what makes this image special.
Making this image was an interesting challenge with a fixed focal length lens. This empty field is in the middle of an office park so there are multi-story buildings on both sides. luckily I was able to put myself in the right spot without either standing in the road or tromping through the field.
On the edge of the office park where I work, there's a farmer's coop. The November sunset provided a wonderful silhouette.
I photographed these train tracks last fall before the COVID-19 lockdown. For me, this image now symbolizes the unknown future we're all headed into.
Sunlight streaming through the clouds gave me a feeling of other worldliness. Images like this are why I always have my camera with me when I'm out for a walk.
Take a short hike from one of the parking lots in Porcupine Mountain state Park in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and you'll be rewarded with spectacular views of Lake of the Clouds. I was blessed with a pretty great sky on the day I was there.

My family went for a walk one summer evening along the shore of Lake Mendota on the campus of the University of Wisconsin. I captured these students sitting among the gulls a couple hours before sunset.
My family's favorite way to vacation is to rent a cabin on a lake a few hours from our home. That's exactly what we did a few summers ago and I went out one afternoon when the sky was interesting to make this image. I love looking at this image and remembering sitting on the pier enjoying the late summer breeze and listening to the sounds of the Northwoods.
My family took an end-of-summer trip to Northern WI and my daughter found Dave’s Falls county park. there are a number of small waterfalls and amazing rock formations to both look at and explore.
